The 3-4 cm-wide incision is made to place the prosthesis mainly in four areas:
– Lower breast
– Around the nipple
– Armpit
– Belly button
The lower breast area is the most preferred among them. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Lower breast is the most appropriate method for all types of silicone prosthesis and in under- or above-muscle techniques.
Recent researches and findings emphasize the methods combining the under and above-muscle planning. This method, known as the dual plane, has become popular following the observation that prosthesis was felt less and fewer capsules were formed. Augmentation mammoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The operation takes around 2 hours. You will have drains and dressings after the operation. You will stay in the hospital for one night. The drains are removed the next day, after which you will be discharged.
Does breast prosthesis cause cancer or a connective tissue disease?
While auto-immune diseases are believed to be causing cancer in some cases, these claims were not proven by abundant and long-term patient studies. Today, both surgeons and patients are looking for natural-looking breast prosthesis that’s almost the same as the organic breast tissue.
How is breast prosthesis placed?
Breast prosthesis is often placed through incision in the armpits, around the nipples and in the curve under the breast. We often prefer the lower breast incision method. We prefer this method as it allows for the under-muscle placement desired. This 3-4 cm-long incision is unnoticeable when standing, yet it may be visible in lying position. Under-muscle placement and the incision method do not harm the channels or tissue of the breast. Besides, it does not obstruct a future mammography screening.
Will drains and dressing be used after the mammoplasty operation?
Drains are placed in both breasts on the operation day and a dressing is applied on the lines of wounds. The patient is asked to wear a brassiere suitable for breast prosthesis. Drains are removed out the next day after the operation and dressings are opened. The patient must wear the brassiere for at least 6 weeks.
Is the post-surgery period painful?
The patient will not feel pain on the operation day due to the local anesthetic agents used. Pain may occur the next day and can be controlled with oral painkillers. The patient starts exercising the arm by doing activities such as combing hair.
How long does breast prosthesis last?
Regardless of the brand, breast prosthesis lasts for about 10 to 15 years. On the 10th year, you start thinking about the right time to replace your prosthesis and you plan the time for operation in consultation with your surgeon on the 15th year.
